Tent selection should consider the capacity, campsite environment, and season / weather conditions when in use.

Capacity: Number of sleepers, additional space for extra friends or gear should be considered.

Campsite environment: A freestanding tent stands with included poles and without the use of stakes, which promises speedy setup at both hard or soft ground, and easy reposition; while non-freestanding tent which requires the use of guy lines and stakes, often allows larger capacity and caters to specific needs, such as dome tents and tunnel tents.

Seasonality: 4 season tents are built for high altitude, arctic or other demanding conditions. Their outer tent always go down to the ground completely, or constructed with snow skirts to withstand extreme weather. Additional poles and more durable materials are used, which means extra weight, less speedy setup but also more strength and adaptability.

3 season tent is designed to be as light as possible, while sacrificing some strength and comfort for this goal. Constructed with more mesh panels and less pole, 3 season tent guarantees better ventilation and easier setup comparing to 4 season one, whereas adaptability and durability may suffer.

For most of the camping trips in Hong Kong, a 3 season tent should be enough.
