Want to take a break outside Hong Kong? Rather than hanging out in beach or bar, you may want to gain a sense of achievement from your vacation. Giving yourself an overseas marathon is indeed a great way to spend your holiday. In the marathon seminar in April, avid marathoner Karson Chan shared his race experience across Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Canada… and here are some tips he would advise if you are planning your first overseas marathon.

Things to know when planning a marathon in Japan
For Accommodation in Japan, Karson suggests browsing Janlan.net ,which provides comprehensive information and immediate booking of hotel and lodges. It is especially useful if you are going for a race in remote city in Japan. Remember to book early if you are not racing in major city!

It is likely to encounter quite a lot of ascent and descent in marathon in Japan. So better include uphill run in your training.

Crab soup, dumplings, fish cake, barbecue… there are vast variety of feasts along the course. But when you slow down to feed your appetite, remember to check your sport watch and pass each check point before the official cut off time. With strict punctuality in Japanese culture, there is no chance to sneak through the check point even if you are just a minute late.
