A Look back on UTMF 2018
~ Team Salomon Jeremy Ritcey ~

Blazing through 100miles Mount Fuji Trail in just 26hr48mins, Jeremy continues to be a promising runner not only in Hong Kong but also in the world-class arena. This time we invite Jeremy to talk us through how he moved up from 50th place to 32nd in this ultra-competitive race.

Q1: How was your feeling during the race, was there any difficult time you encountered under the Mount Fuji?
It was my 3rd time back to attempt this 168 km race, so I knew that I needed to focus, stay calm and roll with the ups and downs. I ran almost the whole race with a big smile on my face!

I had my first bit of difficulty about 50km, just after aid station A2. It was dark and cold and I had a lot of trouble getting my temperature right. I was too cold with just my normal running gear and would quickly overheat with just a little bit of extra clothing. I decided to put a light jacket on and run a little bit easier. I found the right intensity to keep me warm enough and made it through the night feeling great.

In the morning I took the jacket off and picked up the speed, but I only lasted a few hours until I started to feel really sleepy! I decided my legs felt great and I didn't need a break so I started having super small naps on the trail. I had 3 two minute naps throughout the day and each time, I'd feel great for an hour or two afterwards. The last 40k was really tough, but I stuck to my plan and worked myself from the low 50s to 32nd at the finish line. I feel like I paced it really well, something I rarely say afterwards!

Q2. What advice would you give to people who will try UTMF the first time? Any training plan you would suggest?
Be prepared for a long slog. The best training you can do is to put in the miles. It can be done on 10 hour weeks, but ideally you should be doing 15-20. It's a good race for HK runners because there is a big variety of terrain. Don't slack on the road training either, this race has about 40-50km of road running thrown in with the technical mountain terrain.

Q3. Any plan for the upcoming race? Any big race you are planning in second half of 2018 and 2019?
The usual! I'll start the season with the Lantau 70 & then Oxfam Trailwalker and the HK 100. I'd really love to come back to the 9 Dragons and move up onto the podium next year too! We'll see, there is a lot to choose from!!!

Happy running!
